Hey there, and welcome back to Optimal Health & Wellness, the podcast where we talk about real solutions for everyday health issues. I’m Dr. Barney, and today, we’re tackling something that affects almost all of us—Tech Neck.

You know that stiff, achy feeling in your neck and shoulders after staring at your phone or computer for too long? That’s Tech Neck. And in today’s world, where we’re constantly connected to screens, it’s becoming one of the most common causes of neck pain and poor posture.

So let’s break it down—what is Tech Neck, what’s causing it, and, most importantly, what can you do to fix it?

 

Tech Neck is a condition caused by constantly looking down at screens, putting excess strain on your neck, shoulders, and upper back. The human head weighs about 10-12 pounds, but when you tilt your head forward to check your phone, that weight can feel more like 40-60 pounds to your spine. Imagine carrying a small child on your neck all day—that’s what your body is dealing with when your posture is off.

Common symptoms include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Shoulder tension
  • Headaches
  • Reduced mobility
  • Even numbness or tingling in the arms from nerve compression

If this sounds familiar, don’t worry—there’s a lot you can do to correct it.

 

First, fix your screen height. The biggest issue with Tech Neck is looking down at your devices. Try to bring your phone up to eye level instead of bending your head forward. If you’re working at a computer, make sure your screen is at eye level so your neck stays in a neutral position.

Next, take breaks. Set a reminder to look up every 20-30 minutes. A simple stretch or quick neck roll can make a big difference. Even just standing up and rolling your shoulders can help reset your posture.

Another helpful thing is to Strengthen Your Neck & Shoulders.

If your posture has been off for a while, your muscles might be weak. Try Chin tucks or wall angels. A chin tuck is when you Bring your chin straight back, like you’re making a double chin. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10 times.

Wall angels are when you Stand with your back against a wall and move your arms like you’re making a snow angel. This helps strengthen your postural muscles.

 

Lastly, Stretch It Out.

 Gentle stretches can relieve tightness and keep your muscles balanced. 

 

I like Neck side bends. Slowly tilt your ear to your shoulder, hold for 15 seconds, then switch sides.

Chest openers can help, too. Clasp your hands behind your back and lift your arms slightly to stretch out your chest and shoulders.
