Welcome back to the Optimal Chiropractic podcast where we share quick and practical tips to boost your health and well-being.

I’m Dr. Barney, and today we’re focusing on a common issue, breaking sedentary habits.

So, in our modern world, many of us spend a lot of time sitting, whether it’s at a desk, in a car, or on the couch.

Prolonged periods of sitting can lead to a bunch of different health problems, including back pain, poor posture, and reduced circulation.

Don’t worry though, there are lots of simple strategies you can use to move more and break those sedentary habits.

First of all, try incorporating some movement breaks into your daily routine.

Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up and stretch, or to walk around every 30 minutes or so.

Even just a few minutes of movement can help counteract the negative effects of sitting and keep your body feeling better throughout the day.

Next, try adding more physical activity to your day.

Now, this doesn’t have to be intense exercise. Simple activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking or biking to work,

or doing a quick workout at home can make a big difference.

Find activities you actually enjoy and make them a regular part of your daily routine.

Another helpful tip I like is to create a standing workstation if your space allows.

Using a standing desk or an adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing can help reduce the amount of time you spend sitting down.

Even if you can’t use a standing desk, try to find opportunities to stand while working.

Like during phone calls or meetings, I like to incorporate movement into my social activities.

Instead of meeting up with friends for coffee or a meal, I’d suggest maybe a walk or a fun physical activity.

This way you can catch up while staying active and breaking up that sedentary time.

Lastly, don’t forget the power of simple exercises.

Fit some quick stretches or strength building exercises into your day, things like desk stretches, chair squats, or even some seated leg lifts.

You honestly don’t even need to leave your desk space to squeeze more movement into your day.
